Cronins Forge - Dunmanus Bay

Cronin’s Forge has been creating handcrafted and unique wrought iron products for over thirty years. Founded by Carmel Cronin and her late husband Kevin, the Forge is now run by Carmel and her son Brian, a fourth generation blacksmith, and continues to produce some of the most distinctive iron work in Ireland.

Kevin Cronin's artistic flair and determination gave the business the drive to succeed. He began making wrought iron gates and decorative railings, and very quickly his beautiful designs and the quality of his craftsmanship established his name in Cork and Dublin.

Even in those early days he was receiving commissions from interior designers for decorative ironwork for hotels and pubs, including an Irish pub in Berlin. Typical of Kevin, whether it was a hotel in Dublin or the pub in Berlin he would travel to the site to get the feel of the job before starting work, and then visit the site again to see the installation of the finished products.

A purpose built forge with workshop, warehousing, and offices was erected in 1985 on land adjoining the Cronin's home beside Dunmanus Bay, just outside Durrus in West Cork. The buildings provide the necessary space and facilities to house the modern equipment to speed up and develop production and cope with the increasing public demand for high quality forged products. At the same time, since each item is traditionally crafted by hand, every single one has an individuality and identity not found in mass produced goods.

Styles range from traditional to contemporary. Impeccable design and highly skilled workmanship produce individual items from lamps and candle holders to fire baskets, mirrors and tables and chairs. Many people have been collecting Cronin’s Forge work for years, adding to what they believe will be the ‘antiques of tomorrow.’ In addition, the Forge undertakes restoration work as well as commissions for individual pieces such as decorative gates, spiral staircases, garden furniture, arches, tables and benches.

Because of their quality, style and affordability both commissioned and off the peg products are regularly used by interior designers, hotels, landscape architects and homeowners refurbishing their houses to add that final touch of luxury to their projects.

Cronin’s Forge is set in an area is of great natural beauty, nestling beside Dunmanus Bay on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, now part of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. The on-site shop holds examples of ironwork from small to large, commissioned work and indoor and outdoor furniture. In addition there is also a special section for selected products from some of West Cork’s exceptionally gifted craft workers, items chosen to complement the Forge’s display and demonstrating the same thought, care and attention to design and workmanship.

Visitors are welcome to use the car parking and picnic areas on site without charge to take a welcome break and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of this part of West Cork.
